What is Metabolic Syndrome?
Also written as:Metabo / Visceral Fat Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a condition in which excess visceral fat (as measured by waist circumference) is accompanied by multiple out-of-range values across blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipids. It accelerates the progression of arteriosclerosis and is a central concept in specific health checkups (tokutei kenshin) and specific health guidance (tokutei hoken shido).
Reference range guideline
A diagnosis applies when waist circumference meets the threshold (85 cm or more for men, 90 cm or more for women) and 2 or more of the following are above their respective criteria: blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipids.
* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.
How to interpret an out-of-range result
If you meet the criteria, the primary approach is lifestyle improvement (diet, exercise, and weight loss). You may also be referred for specific health guidance (tokutei hoken shido).
