What is Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)?

Also written asHigh blood pressure

Hypertension is a condition in which resting blood pressure is consistently above normal thresholds on repeated measurement. It causes no noticeable symptoms while silently promoting hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis), and is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. Diagnosis is based not on a single reading but on multiple measurements, including home blood pressure monitoring.

Reference range guideline

Hypertension is generally defined as 140/90 mmHg or above when measured in a clinical setting, or 135/85 mmHg or above when measured at home (values may vary depending on measurement conditions).

* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.

How to interpret an out-of-range result

If hypertension is identified, the first steps are regular home blood pressure monitoring and reviewing your lifestyle habits. Your doctor will determine whether treatment is needed based on your readings and any related health conditions.
