What is Waist Circumference (Abdominal Circumference)?

Also written asAbdominal circumference / Navel circumference

Waist circumference is measured around the abdomen at the level of the navel and is used as an indicator of visceral fat accumulation. In specific health checkups (tokutei kenshin), it serves as the gateway criterion for determining metabolic syndrome. Unlike overall body shape (which reflects subcutaneous fat), waist circumference reflects the degree of visceral fat buildup.

Reference range guideline

For the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, a waist circumference of 85 cm or more in men and 90 cm or more in women is considered indicative of visceral fat accumulation.

* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.

How to interpret an out-of-range result

If the measurement exceeds the reference threshold, an overall assessment for metabolic syndrome is conducted in conjunction with blood pressure, blood glucose, and lipid levels, and a review of lifestyle habits is recommended.
