What is HDL Cholesterol?
Also written as:HDL-C / Good Cholesterol
HDL cholesterol is known as the "good" cholesterol because it picks up excess cholesterol deposited in blood vessel walls and transports it back to the liver for processing. Low levels are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis.
Reference range guideline
Generally, a level below 40 mg/dL is classified as "low HDL cholesterolemia" (thresholds may vary by facility).
* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.
How to interpret an out-of-range result
Low levels are taken into account when assessing atherosclerosis risk. Contributing factors may include lack of exercise, smoking, and obesity.
