What is Creatinine?

Also written asCr / Serum Creatinine

Creatinine is a waste product generated by muscles. It is filtered by the kidneys and excreted in the urine. When kidney function declines, creatinine accumulates in the blood, making it a useful indicator of how well the kidneys are working. It is also used to calculate eGFR.

Reference range guideline

Generally, up to approximately 1.0 mg/dL for men and approximately 0.7 mg/dL for women are considered normal ranges (individual variation exists depending on muscle mass).

* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.

How to interpret an out-of-range result

An elevated level may suggest reduced kidney function. Results are evaluated together with eGFR and urine protein. Creatinine levels may also be checked before contrast-enhanced CT or MRI procedures.
