What is γ-GTP (Gamma-GTP)?

Also written asγ-GT / GGT

γ-GTP is an enzyme found in abundance in the liver and bile ducts. It rises in the bloodstream when the liver or biliary tract is damaged or affected by alcohol. In health checkups, it is evaluated as a liver function marker alongside AST and ALT.

Reference range guideline

Generally, up to approximately 50 U/L for men and 30 U/L for women is considered the guideline (values may vary by facility and measurement method).

* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.

How to interpret an out-of-range result

Elevated levels may suggest alcohol consumption, fatty liver, or biliary tract abnormalities. Since the cause cannot be identified from this value alone, further investigation such as abdominal ultrasound may be recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my γ-GTP high even though I don't drink alcohol?
γ-GTP can be elevated by causes other than alcohol, including fatty liver, biliary tract abnormalities, and certain medications. If you are concerned, consult your doctor about further evaluation such as an abdominal ultrasound.
