What is Urine Protein (Proteinuria)?

Also written asUrinary Protein / Proteinuria

Urine protein refers to the detection of protein in the urine, which under normal circumstances should be present only in negligible amounts. It may appear transiently, but when persistent it can indicate kidney damage and is an important marker in the assessment of chronic kidney disease.

Reference range guideline

Normally negative (−). A result of ± or + or higher on repeated tests is considered an indication for further investigation.

* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.

How to interpret an out-of-range result

If a positive result persists, it is evaluated together with kidney function (eGFR). Because protein can appear transiently due to fever, exercise, or prolonged standing, a repeat test is performed to confirm the finding.
