What is ALT (GPT)?

ALT (formerly known as GPT) is an enzyme found primarily in liver cells. When liver cells are damaged, ALT levels in the blood rise. It is considered more specific to the liver than some other markers, and is used to assess conditions such as fatty liver disease and hepatitis.
Reference range guideline
Generally, up to around 30 U/L is considered within the normal range (may vary by facility).

How to interpret an out-of-range result
Elevated levels may suggest liver damage such as fatty liver disease or hepatitis. Results are evaluated together with AST, γ-GTP, and imaging studies.
