What is AST (GOT)?

Also written asGOT / AST(GOT)

AST (formerly known as GOT) is an enzyme found not only in the liver but also in heart muscle and skeletal muscle. Levels rise when any of these tissues are damaged. It is used together with ALT to assess liver function.

Reference range guideline

Generally, up to around 30 U/L is considered the guideline (this may vary by facility).

* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.

How to interpret an out-of-range result

Elevated levels may indicate liver damage, but can also rise after intense exercise or due to muscle injury. Results are interpreted in conjunction with the AST/ALT ratio and other test findings.
