What is Hyperuricemia?

Also written asHigh uric acid

Hyperuricemia is a condition in which uric acid levels in the blood are elevated (generally above 7.0 mg/dL). It can trigger gout attacks and is also associated with kidney damage and lifestyle-related diseases. Rather than viewing it solely as a gout issue, a comprehensive review of overall lifestyle habits is recommended.

Reference range guideline

A serum uric acid level above 7.0 mg/dL is considered hyperuricemia in both men and women.

* Reference ranges vary by testing facility, measurement method, age, sex, and other factors. Please check the reference range printed on your result sheet.

How to interpret an out-of-range result

If elevated levels are identified, lifestyle habits such as diet (purine intake and alcohol consumption), obesity, and fluid intake should be reviewed. If gout attacks or kidney damage are present, a physician will determine the appropriate course of treatment.
