What is Carotid Plaque?
Also written as:Carotid Plaque / Carotid Wall Thickening
Carotid plaque is a raised buildup of lipids and other substances on the wall of the carotid artery, which runs through the neck, and is a sign of advancing arteriosclerosis. It is assessed by carotid ultrasound and used as an indicator of systemic arteriosclerosis and the risk of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease.
How to interpret an out-of-range result
If carotid plaque is detected, the basic approach is to manage risk factors such as blood pressure, blood sugar, lipids, and smoking. Depending on the size and condition of the plaque, ongoing monitoring or further diagnostic testing may be considered.
