What is Biopsy?

Also written asBiopsy / Tissue biopsy

A biopsy is a pathological examination in which a small sample of tissue is taken from an abnormal area and studied in detail under a microscope. It is performed to determine whether an abnormality found during endoscopy, mammography, ultrasound, or other imaging is benign or malignant. Results may take anywhere from a few days to about two weeks.

How to interpret an out-of-range result

A biopsy is a test used to reach a definitive diagnosis; undergoing one does not in itself mean that a disease has been confirmed. Your doctor will explain the next steps and recommended course of action based on the results.
