A thin camera is inserted through the mouth or nose to directly examine the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It can detect small lesions that are difficult to identify with a barium X-ray, and tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken on the spot if needed.
Japan's national gastric cancer screening program recommends endoscopy once every 2 years for adults aged 50 and older. Those with a history of H. pylori infection or gastric symptoms are advised to consult a physician about earlier screening.
